GOALS and OBJECTIVES of ACAM (African
Communities Against Malaria)
- Because malaria is the number one killer of children
less than five years of age in Africa and because it is a preventable
with simple low technical approaches,
- Because global, national, in district level
authorities endorse Roll Back Malaria, but coverage with the interventions
is still very low in most African countries
- Because little effort has been made to engage
the energy of NGOs as community mobilizers and "clients"
for continuous product improvement,
- Because innovative community-focused strategies
are feasible,
- Because NGOs' operational experience is often
limited to a small area, is fragmented from other NGOs and agencies
undertaking the same work, is poorly documented and lacks diffusion
into the wider, accessible literature,
- Because NGOs are relatively flexible and ready
to introduce new interventions and innovations for malaria prevention\control,
- Because the private business sector is eager to
engage NGOs in the marketing and sales of their RBM products and services,
namely ITNs and insecticides, but lack a well established interface
or experience in working with NGOs,
- ACAM (African Communities Against Malaria) seeks
to create a vital focal point for dialogue, business planning, monitoring
and evaluation, and collaboration between NGOs, communities, and other
private and public agencies engaged in the fight against malaria in
Africa.
